Someone told me this once and it has stuck with me: In a public place, if you see a dog being kicked, suddenly lots of people will speak up and say, “What are you doing?” But if you see an adult slapping a child, you automatically assume that the adult has the right to, maybe because it is a parent or guardian … We treat children as property; we say someone else has their rights, which is not true. Every child has their own rights, feelings, and entitlements.
